Blog # 18 : KHIRSU, The Hidden Gem near Rudraprayag

KHIRSU, is a small village nestled in between picturesque hilly terrain in the Pauri district of Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. If you are in the Pauri - Garhwal region and one who craves for serenity and peace, you would love to be there.

Last night we were in Lansdowne, a census town of British Raj, still carrying the legacy forward. In the morning just before checking out from the hotel, we visited the 'Tiffin Top view point'. The mountain range viewed from there under the clearest of skies was a prelude of what to expect the entire day. We were out for Khirsu after having breakfast.

ROUTE To KHIRSU

The blissful few hours of journey enroute Khirsu is worth mentioning. The roads were narrow but well maintained bituminous tracks, taking turns and corners through small villages and sloping forests. The roads were deserted with hardly any tourist vehicles seen during most of the journey. You can just stopover at any place, have a break, probalby pick up some Oranges from roadside Orange trees and no one is going to give you an earful. The journey became all the more joyful when with every turn of roads the Landscapes changes dramatically and forces one to stop to notice it and to frame it for future memories. The stretched out Garhwal range with very distinct 'Chowkhamba' remained as a constant companion all through the journey. The further we were going, the vastness of the mountain peaks were becoming more and more prominent. As if, they are calling you and you are being dragged there like an encharmed soul. The very reason to be amidst mountains seemed to have established itself.

ACCOMODATION at KHIRSU:

Khirsu has many homestays, few of them renowned ones. We stayed in GMVN TRH, Khirsu. This Government property has moderate amenities but the location itself gives you a clear panoramic view of the gigantic Garhwal range. The dim lights at the accomodation, evening snacks with hot 'chai' and moonlit snow peaks at the backdrop almost scripted down one perfect evening saga. Once again the reason for being in the mountains were justified.

There is a well maintained park nearby, where you could stroll around or you could just soak in the atmosphere, intimating yourself with the likes of  'Kedar dome', 'Chowkhamba', 'Hati parvat' all day long while taking a leisurely walk around the village. Khirsu will definitely calm your senses, boost your energy and would prove to be that perfect offbeat place to be.

THE TRIP TO REMEMBER It was 16 th of october,2015.The puja vacation has just kicked off. Well, when i say "puja vacation" it simply refers to my beautiful wife,Smritikana,a teacher herself, who enjoys this long vacations quite often and for myself my profession doesnt help me with this but somehow i have developed this deep seated liking to explore the world and reinvent myself.Last january we were out for Andaman and now we are all set to venture north of bengal and west sikkim. This time we have with us my friend Saumya and his wife Shrabani.Saumya, having known him from my childhood,is a travel-freak to say the least and has done something sort of PhD when it comes to visiting sikkim. He says " sikkim brings out a new ME in ME" We did some decent shopping before we started as is the case everytime we are out for a trip.My wife just loves to wear new things and makes it a point even if it means skipping our puja shopping. Well lot of introduction i made. We event...

" The life you have led doesn't mean the only life you have .".If that is the case I have a load of things to be done.Would you believe me If I say I was fearful of riding a bike even as a pillion some 1 year back, then somehow the quoted text above took the better of me.Yes I have lot left to do in life and life that you have is your only chance. You always need a stimulant to even see your supressed desire and my wife, such a friend, proved to be that catalyst. She persuade and I oblige. On a hurry I bought a bike,a 155cc machine from Suzuki(gixxer) and on the 1st birthday of our bike here we were all ready for our 1st bike tour in group, destination tajpur. If I say I am a novice in touring with a bike,it shall not be an overstatement as the fellow bikers had lot of experience by their side. All 6 of us are school friends.Subhadip had more than 70000km of ride experience ,while Saumya had nothing short of 30000 km I guess.Only Shubhankar is someone whom I look up to when it ...
